The dispute
between the United States and the countries of
Antigua and Barbuda over a WTO ruling on online
gambling that has lasted for an extended period of
time due to an agreement to give the United States
time to offer a more amicable agreement but that
time is quickly coming to a close which has brought
the two sides together in Washington on the 23rd May
'08 to seek a final resolution.
Both sides are
known to have submitted proposals to the other and
twice those proposals were rejected by the other
party and so now negotiations will resume but they
have a time deadline of June 6th when the agreed
suspension of legal hostilities will end and the WTO
actions will recommence.
Of course
Antigua and Barbuda would like to see the United
States opened up to online gambling and it is
painfully obvious the USA is not wanting to make
that concession. Neither side has commented on the
areas of the other's proposal which were not
acceptable, only stating they were rejected but that
negotiations remained open for further discussion.
Next week a
big banking convention takes place in Canada which
will involve the Caribbean nations and many of those
big bankers and investors will be watching the
proceedings between the two feuding parties as the
outcome of this matter may greatly effect banking in
this hemisphere of the world.
Please watch
this site for more news on the WTO ruling on online
gambling in the United States as there will be an
outcome. However this writer would not be surprised
to see the U.S. thumb its nose once again at the
small island nations but it may be a grave mistake
if they do because of the actions these countries
could take such as ignoring USA patent laws and
selling software, movies, music etc all at pennies
on the dollar without any compensation going to the
artists or authors who created these products.
